Kicking off with the success story of Ireland’s long road towards the recognition of the right to abortion, the annual 2018 EuroNGOs conference sought to re-energise the European SRHR community for the road ahead under the banner ‘Act on Hope’. Over 150 participants gathered in the heart of Ghent to share and exchange the lessons learned and to discuss the challenges promoting SRHR at home and in the world.
EuroNGOs is the partnership of organisations that act together inside and from Europe to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. It sets out to inspire its members to take action, which is reflected in the network’s name change from ‘EuroNGOs’ to ‘Inspire’. One of the means to do so is to open up the SRHR community to other networks and communities of activists, such as people with disabilities, ethnic minorities, feminist activists and faith-based associations.
This year’s conference devoted particular attention to the plight of migrant women, minorities and people with disabilities and their challenges in realising their sexual and reproductive health and rights. SRHR activists and professionals exchanged programmatic and advocacy experiences.
Time was also set aside to discuss the importance of SRHR in Universal Health Coverage (SDG3, target 3.8), and to look ahead at the 25th anniversary of the ICPD Programme of Action, in 2019.
Sensoa actively participated in the conference and shared its expertise on comprehensive sexuality education in the sex education workshop.
