Girls are the key to success of the 2030 Development Agenda and forced marriage, child labour, female genital cutting and other practices undermine their health and rights. That is the main message of the 2016 State of the World Population of the UNFPA.

Ten is the crucial age for girls everywhere. In some parts of the world, a girl enjoys a myriad of opportunities to develop herself at school and in her free time toward a satisfying and dignified life as a young woman of 24. In other parts of the world, girls are considered goods for sale or exchange, have to marry at a young age, do not enjoy (quality) education, become pregnant far too early and lead a completely dependent life.

On October 20th, the State of the World Population was presented all around the world, also in Brussels. Simon Herteleer’s speech, Sensoa volunteer and member of the board of YSAFE, a European youth network advocating for sexuality awareness, was highly appreciated.
“Young girls already have an idea of their future. Some want to get married, some want children, some don’t. Instead of trying to teach them from a top-down perspective, why do we not ask them what it involves, who gets to decide on children, why they want a husband. It is not a question of how we can teach them about their Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights but rather how we can encourage them to start the conversation. If a girl wants two children she should be able to understand some of the processes involved. Let’s start from there.’
