Eighty-nine parliamentarians from 57 countries called on G7 governments to urgently address the challenges of migration, particularly as it affects women and girls. Their appeal came at an international parliamentarians' conference in Rome ahead of the G7 summit in Italy. Belgian Members of Parliament Petra De Sutter, Sabien Lahaye-Battheu and Daniel Seneseal were amongst the participants.
In their appeal, the MPs called the G7 to adopt coherent policies that strengthen the development focus in the countries of origin and stressed the joint-responsibility of all European Union countries when it comes to tackling migration. The appeal also wants all countries to promote, protect and fulfill human rights and the fundamental freedoms of all migrants, regardless of their migration status.
The appeal wants to recognize the positive contributions of migrants and to adopt policies that embrace the contribution migration makes to the political, economic, social and cultural fabric of their countries of origin and destination. Furthermore special attention was called to respect and ensure the sexual and reproductive health and rights of migrants.
The 2017 International G7/20 Parliamentarians’ Conference was organised by Italian All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health and Women’s rights in collaboration with the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development (EPF) and the Italian Association for Women in Development (AIDOS).
The theme of the conference was “The Challenges of a World on the Move: Migration and Gender Equality, Women’s Agency and Sustainable Development.”
