Despite the international backlash against SRHR and an increasing anti-women’s rights sentiment entering our decision-making spaces both in Europe and across the Atlantic, the past year saw financial and political commitments solidified and support for SRHR championed by European donor countries in many global fora, including Belgium.
The latest report by Countdown 2030 Europe, the European consortium advancing universal access to family planning, showed that SRHR funding largely remained protected, even where some cuts to Official Development Assistance (ODA) were made. Of the European countries under review, 10 out of 12 either increased or maintained funding to SRHR and renewed their political commitments.
Belgium was among the countries increasing its support for SRHR, as well as the UK, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden and Ireland, while Germany, France and Finland sustained 2016 levels. Belgium accelerated its support for SRHR with the launch of She Decides, the international response to the US’ reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule in early 2017. Belgium increased its support for UNFPA, supported African IPPF member associations suffering from the Global Gag Rule and is integrating ‘She Decides’ or attention for SRHR in its new governmental cooperation programmes with its partner countries in West Africa.
