Belgium exemplary for sexual health promotion

28/6/2017

At the conference of the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) in Prague, Belgium stood out again as one of the most progressive and exemplary countries worldwide when it comes to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights.

With Zanzu, Belgium has been a pioneer in the sexual and reproductive health promotion of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The multilingual website that Sensoa developed for recently arrived migrants was presented by partner BZgA, the German agency for health promotion.

The Flag system, a method to prevent, identify and respond to sexually transgressive behaviour was also met with great interest. Sensoa developed the Flag system and Rutgers, the Dutch member association of IPPF, will now be rolling it out internationally.

In addition, Body&Rights, an e-tutorial on sexual and reproductive health and rights in development cooperation, developed by Sensoa upon the initiative of the SRHR Working Group of BeCause Health, the Belgian network for international health, received special attention.

Several speakers advocated a positive approach to sexuality and attention for sexual pleasure within sexual health policies and by health workers. Sexual  pleasure and safety are at the core of the methods developed by Sensoa. Websites such as allesoverseks.be and mannenseks.be (both in Dutch), illustrate this.
