On 10-19 July the UN High-Level Political Forum takes place in New York. The Forum monitors the progress in realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Belgium will report for the 2nd time on its efforts. The report discusses both Belgium’s domestic progress and international support for the sustainable development goals.
Belgium underlines its priorities
In its report, Belgium underlines its priorities in its international cooperation. The right to health, with specific attention for sexual and reproductive health and rights, is a first priority. Belgium seeks to advance that right by strengthening health systems in collaboration with governments, civil society and academic partners in partner countries.
Gender is a second priority. In a context of growing conservatism with regards to gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights Belgium is emphasising the importance of multilateralism. Sexual and reproductive health and rights are a priority in some of Belgium’s portfolios in partner countries, and in its partnership with UNFPA and UNAIDS.

Results of international efforts remain invisible
Belgium’s self-rapportage could have served as a momentum to look at the efforts, progress and the concrete results of Belgium’s international cooperation. Unfortunately the results of its international efforts remain invisible. The report lists what Belgium (and Flanders) are doing internationally, but does not discuss more in-depth what is being achieved. That is a missed opportunity.
