Late March the American association ‘International Organisation for the Family’ (IOF) and anti-choice associations ProVita and CitizenGo co-organised the 5th World Congress of Families in the Italian city of Verona.
The congress allows anti-choice associations to meet associations who are against freedom of choice with regard to relations, sexuality and family planning.

Research by Open Democracy reveals that since 2017 the organisations have also been actively engaging leading extreme right politicians from European countries. During the congress, government leaders and ministers of Hungary, Poland and Italy were given the floor to express their support for so-called ‘traditional family values’, against gay marriage, contraceptives and abortion. It is no coincidence that the congress is organised in the lead-up to the European parliamentary elections. Certain polls predict an electoral victory for extreme right parties.
Neil Datta, secretary of the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development has documented the ideology and transnational connections of the organisations behind the World Congress in a research report entitled 'Restoring the Natural Order' and Arté covered the congress in a 2017 documentary on anti-abortion movements in Europe.
In protest to the organisation of the World Congress of Families, ten thousand Italians took the streets in Verona.
