During a She Decides visit to Benin and Senegal, the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation, Alexander De Croo announced an increase of his support to the UNFPA and International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).
Of the €10 million additional support for SRHR Belgium promised during the She Decides International Conference of March 2st, €2 million will go to additional core support for UNFPA, and €1.5 million to UNFPA’s country programme in Benin. IPPF member associations in partner countries of the Belgian development cooperation will receive €4 million in support.
IPPF and its member associations, which provide sexual and reproductive health services and advocate sexual and reproductive rights in over 170 countries, are amongst the NGOs most seriously affected by the Global Gag Rule, reenacted under the republican Trump-Pence administration. UNFPA has also lost its US support under the new administration, directly affecting the lives of millions of women and girls.
With the additional support, Belgian support to UNFPA will amount to a total of € 36 million over the next four years.
