The yearly Commission on Population and Development (CPD) suffered from the consequences of the lockdown measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Having been postponed and changed into virtual gatherings did help to not bring member-states closer to a joint recognition of the outstanding challenges.
The 53rd Session of the CPD could not reach an agreement, including on sexual and reproductive health and rights language. After different efforts by the Chair to overcome the deadlock, the Commission decided to retake this year’s special theme on food security and nutrition in 2021. Since the Commission has failed to adopt agreed conclusions in the past years, it has called on the member states to review the CPD’s methods of work, hoping to prevent future stalemates.
The Commission makes one of the most important UN fora to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide. It sees to the implementation of the Cairo Programme of Action that was adopted 26 years ago and celebrated with the Nairobi Summit of 2019.
