As part of the She Decides-Initiative, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation, Alexander De Croo visited Benin and Senegal, partner countries of the Belgian Development Cooperation. In Benin, the Minister signed two programmes promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights.
In Benin, Belgium supports UNFPA’s e-learning project on sexuality education and sexual violence for young people and women with a €1.5 million grant and UNICEF’s programme against child marriages with a € 1.170 million grant. The programme aims to increase children and young people’s access to justice and protect them from violence and sexual exploitation.
Almost two out of every ten girls in Benin have their first child before they are 15. One third of all girls marries before the age of 18. More than half of Benin’s population is made up of young people. The programmes will address their sexual and reproductive health and rights needs.
UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador, Goedele Liekens, and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Axelle Red, both Belgian nationals and long-time advocates of women and children’s rights were part of the Minister’s delegation.
